We have built a community. What is the next chapter?
American Muslims have spent generations building mosques, schools, relief organizations, youth programs, seminaries, civic organizations and national institutions. That work matters.
Yet our capacity for systematically helping the wider society encounter and understand Islam has not developed at the same pace.
The opportunity is not to abandon what we have built. It is to use more of that strength outwardly.
Sharing Islam cannot remain the responsibility of a small number of specialized organizations alone.
Specialized dawah organizations remain essential. But mosques, scholars, educators, youth leaders, media organizations, service institutions, donors and individual Muslims can each contribute in different ways.
The opportunity is cultural as much as organizational.
Dawah can increasingly become part of how American Muslims understand our presence, relationships, service and responsibility to our neighbors.
